IntranetWare Installation Guide

Index

Welcome to IntranetWareTM for Small Business. This product is based on Novell's core product, IntranetWare. IntranetWare for Small Business includes many of the features of the core product plus several tools designed specifically for Small Business networks.

This introduction acquaints you with some of the advantages networking offers and introduces many of the sources you can refer to for information about your network.

Novell IntranetWare openes up many possibilities for making your business more successful. Here are some of them.

  • Network users can share directories and files stored on the server, thereby freeing up space on workstation hard drives.
  • Network users, groups, or departments can share the same printer.
  • You can easily upgrade your software or add additional hardware. As your company grows, your network can grow too.
  • Mission-critical information can be stored on the server and be backed up and archived more easily than if it is stored on individual hard drives.
  • Users can log in to the server from home or the field through modems attached to the server or dial out to bulletin boards or Internet service providers.

About This Manual

This Installation Guide documents the procedures for installing and setting up your Small Business network.

Chapter 1, "Getting Started," introduces the tools, documentation, and help programs you can use as you set up your network. Also included is a checklist of set up tasks.

Chapter 2, "Understanding Networks and Novell Directory Services," explains several important networking concepts, including Novell Directory ServicesTM (NDSTM), Directory trees, and NDS objects and their properties. It also introduces the Novell Easy Administration Tool (NEAT) that has been developed for this version of IntranetWare.

Chapter 3, "Installing the Server," helps you prepare and install your server.

Chapter 4, "Setting Up the Network," provides an overview of several setup tasks, such as installing Novell ClientTM software on the administrator's workstation, logging in to the network, and running QuickStart or NEAT to set up user and group accounts.

Chapter 5, "Installing Online Documentation," explains how to install the online documentation onto the server or how to access it from the documentation CD-ROM, whichever you prefer. Also included are instructions for launching Netscape* Navigator to view the documentation and instructions for searching for and printing product information.

Chapter 6, "Installing Client Workstations," introduces the Novell client (workstation) software included with IntranetWare for Small Business. Several clients are included; each is designed for a specific desktop platform and function. This chapter also explains how to install the clients from either CD-ROM or from diskettes.

Chapter 7, "Accessing the Network," provides instructions for logging in to and out of the network using Novell clients for Windows*, DOS, OS/2*, or Macintosh*.

Chapter 8, "Upgrading to IntranetWare Small Enterprise," provides instructions for upgrading from NetWare 3TM. An overview of procedures for upgrading other Novell operating systems along with cross references to detailed instructions in the online documentation is also included.

Appendix A, "Manually Selecting Drivers for Hardware Devices," provides instructions for loading hardware drivers (for hard disks, network boards, and other hardware devices) if Install cannot autodetect them.

Appendix B, "Creating Client Installation Diskettes," provides instructions for making client diskettes so that you can install client software on workstations that don't have CD-ROM drives. (If the workstation has a CD-ROM drive, you can install directly from CD-ROM.)

Appendix C, "Using NetWare Application Launcher," provides steps on creating an icon for the NetWare Application Launcher (NAL) and explains how to access the NAL icon and your applications.

Appendix D, "Upgrading Personal NetWare," provides steps on upgrading from Personal NetWare to IntranetWare for Small Business.
